What does can mean?

Can is a verb which means to be able to, to be permitted to or to request to do something.

For example:

  • Can you pass me that novel? (request to do something)

  • You can leave anytime you like (to be permitted).

  • I can write five books in a year (be able to).

What does may mean?

May is a verb which expresses possibility or hope.

For example:

  • May I get you something to drink (possibility)?

  • May she rest in peace (hope).

What’s the difference between can and may?

Can means to be able to, permitted to or request to do something while may indicates possibility or hope.

  • You can go to the party without an invitation but the host may not let you in.
