Assumption vs. presumption

What does assumption mean?

Assumption is a noun which means something that is accepted as true or certain to happen but one doesn’t have proof of. Assumption can also mean taking on power or responsibility.

For example:

·      She found her initial assumption of the staff member correct (accepted as true).

·      The village supported her assumption of responsibility as village chief (taking on power).

What does presumption mean?

Presumption is a noun which means an idea that is taken to be true based on probable evidence. Presumption can also mean behaviour that is perceived as arrogant or disrespectful.

For example:

·      The villagers held a presumption that the village was safe from dragons (taken to be true).

·      The woman was frustrated at his presumption (behaviour perceived as arrogant).

What’s the difference between assumption and presumption?

Assumption means to accept something as true which isn’t founded on strong evidence, while presumption is based on evidence which has some credibility.

For example:

·      Her assumption that she would be entitled to a legal presumption of innocence was misguided as she was denied bail.
