What does amount mean?

Amount is a noun which means a quantity or amount. Amount is usually used with mass nouns, which are nouns which present something which can’t be counted, such as small or large.

For example:

·      I brought a huge amount of chocolate.

What does number mean?

Number is a noun which means quantity or amount. Unlike amount, number is used with count nouns. These are nouns which can be counted, such as one dog, this door or those houses.

For example:

·      We have discussed this matter on a number of occasions. 

What’s the difference between amount and number?

Both amount and number mean quantity or amount. Amount is used with mass nouns (small, large) while number is used with count nouns (five, those).

For example:

·      On a number of occasions, I’ve brought a huge amount of chocolate.
