What does alternate mean?

Alternate can be a verb, adjective or noun. As a verb it means to occur in turn repeatedly. As an adjective, alternate means every second, or one of multiple possibilities. On the other hand, alternate as a noun means a person who acts as a deputy or substitute.

Alternative is a noun or an adjective which means available as one of multiple possibilities or choices. Alternative can also refer to activities which challenge traditional norms.

Alternate and alternative as nouns have the same meaning. Alternate is more popular in North America while you’re more likely to find alternative used in UK English.
