What does allusion mean?

Allusion is a noun which means to call something to mind without explicitly naming or mentioning it.

For example:

·      The main character is an allusion to the author’s rebellious nature.

What does reference mean?

Reference is a noun which refers to the action of mentioning something.

For example:

·      The author has listed his references at the back of the book. 

What’s the difference between allusion and reference?

Allusion means to hint at something without explicitly naming it, while reference means to mention something.

For example:

·      In addition to the allusion that the CEO is being blackmailed, the author has other references to the struggles faced by this company.
